Ten Holiday Miracles
|
On December 17th we received an urgent call from the Humboldt County Animal Shelter. "Do you have room for a very sweet border collie?" they asked.
"Could it wait until tomorrow?" we replied, "Our kennels are full right now."
"I don't think so," they mused. "She's pregnant and could give birth at any moment!"
So we made space in our employee break room for Polly Anna - a beautiful black smooth coated border collie with a delicate white blaze - and on December 21st she gave birth to ten little miracles.
Polly Anna was found wandering alone on Alder Point Road in Garberville. Who knows what would have happened to her and her puppies if a Good Samaritan hadn't found her. Fortunately, Polly had a guardian angel watching out for her.

Spay Day Photo Contest
|
It's time for the annual Spay Day Online Pet Photo Contest--will your pet win? In conjunction with Spay Day, the Humane Society of the United States and Humane Society International run an online pet photo contest to provide an opportunity for people to celebrate their pets, win great prizes and raise critical funds for spay/neuter.
To submit a pet photo, go to www.humanesociety.org/issues/spay_day/, then choose the Sequoia Humane Society as your participating shelter. Send emails to friends and family encouraging them to vote for your pet -- each vote costs $1 and all the proceeds go to the Sequoia Humane Society to help spay and neuter even more animals. Contest runs January 20th through March 4, 2010.
Last Year the Sequoia Humane Society received $750 from pet lovers in Humboldt County and around the world!

Reflections on a No-Kill Shelter
|
In the four years I've been with the Sequoia Humane Society I've seen many positive changes - within our organization and the community - resulting in fewer homeless animals in Humboldt County, and better care for the cats and dogs we take into our shelter.
In the last four years we have spayed and neutered over 5,400 cats and dogs through our voucher and adoption programs, preventing the births of hundreds of thousands of unwanted animals - many of whom would certainly have ended up abandoned or brought to a shelter, and many more that would have died without ever knowing the comfort of human companionship.
Thanks to the generosity of Ernest & May Freeman, the Freeman Trust - administered by the Humboldt Area Foundation - has helped to spay and neuter hundreds more animals throughout the area. As a result, we have seen a reduction in the number of kittens and puppies flooding our shelters in the spring and summer. Someday we may even achieve our goal of a community where all pets have a loving, lifelong home." more...

Happy Tails Adoption Stories
|
Hello everyone at Sequoia!
This is "Mitzi Star" with a letter to let you know how I'm getting along and to wish you a Merry Christmas - mine is going to be perfect, as I'm so happy here in my forever home.
Let me tell you of my adventures. The first day in my new home I hid out most of the day. However, with all the nice food, dishes of water and a potty box offered to me I decided rather quickly that this would be a good place and nice folks. This is a great place to explore, plus I am always being petted, held and loved.
At first I had the run of every room. Then, when I accidentally unplugged the computer, I had to wait awhile before being allowed back into that room. My mom says it's safest for me to be a house kitty, and you know, I think she is correct. I have plenty of windows to look out, with some right down to the floor. I bird watch every day and even bat at the rain drops running down the windows…Meow!
I have a nice bed plus several laundry baskets that are mine to use. Dad built me a super scratching post with a platform on top - I use it all the time, though at first I tried to eat the rope - now I know better.
One thing the folks thought was great was when I discovered a bird's nest in the clothes dryer vent. They claim I saved the day as there could have been a fire - wow, did I get lots of praise over that one…Meow!" more...

I Rescued a Human Today
|
Her eyes met mine as she walked down the corridor peering apprehensively into the kennels. I felt her need instantly and knew I had to help her. I wagged my tail, not too exuberantly, so she wouldn't be afraid. As she stopped at my kennel I blocked her view from a little accident I had in the back of my cage. I didn't want her to know that I hadn't been walked today. Sometimes the shelter keepers get too busy and I didn't want her to think poorly of them.
As she read my kennel card I hoped that she wouldn't feel sad about my past. I only have the future to look forward to and want to make a difference in someone's life. She got down on her knees and made little kissy sounds at me. I shoved my shoulder and side of my head up against the bars to comfort her. Gentle fingertips caressed my neck; she was desperate for companionship. A tear fell down her cheek and I raised my paw to assure her that all would be well. more...

Mouche Thanks You!
|
Hi, my name is Mouche. You may have heard of me because when I first came to the Sequoia Humane Society they ran a test that said I had something called "feline leukemia," which is bad, because they kept me all by myself so I didn't give this bad thing to the other kitties. Everyone was really nice to me, though - they even gave me extra special attention and pet and brushed me lots. Maybe they were trying to make up for the life I had before I came here.
Anyway, I just wanted to say "thanks" to everyone who gave me a chance to get better, 'cause they ran another test and this time I came up clean! No more feline leukemia, which means I can hang out in the big room with all the other cats (I like having friends). Hopefully someone will see how handsome I am and take me home. I'm a mellow guy and won't be any trouble, except that I have really long fur that gets tangled up in knots, so it would be nice if you would brush me every once in a while. You can come visit me and all the other kitties here at the shelter - they need good homes too, so even if we don't hit it off I'm sure you'll find someone to love.
Best, Mouche

In Memory of Abbey
|
Dear Sequoia Humane Society Staff,
My husband and I are sending this check on behalf of the citizens of Eureka who donated money towards a reward fund to find those responsible for the death of our little Abbey. It is with much regret that I have to give up hope that those responsible will come forward. Not a day goes by that I don't think of Abbey and remember the precious angel that she was. I pray that the group that committed the act will never be given the opportunity to hurt another animal.
I want to thank you for all the work you that you do. I appreciate the careful screening you do to ensure that pets are placed in responsible homes. We have loved all our animals with our whole hearts; we have and will always adopt our babies from shelters. Thank you again for all your hard work in caring for and placing animals in desperate need of homes.
Sincerely, Abbey's Family

My Volunteer Experience
|
| In this day and age it is hard to find the time to do anything other than work. Most peole work one, if not two, full time jobs and if kids are thrown into the mix, everything gets even more complicated. After a lot of consideration I decided to spend my extra time volunteering at the Sequoia Humane Society. I am a full time student at College of the Redwoods with nineteen units. At first I thought, "How am I going to fit this into everything else I have to do in one day?" My attitude soon changed.
After my first day volunteering, I had a mixture of feelings: I felt guilty that it had taken 25 years for me to do something to help others; I felt happy because I was helping animals; and I felt sorrow because these animals, although in a wonderful place, do not have a home with a family.
There are many reasons why people should volunteer at animal shelters, but the main reason is because it helps the animals. It also helps the employees, because they have so many responsibilities -- such as feeding, grooming and cleaning -- and they just don't have enough time to give each animal proper attention, socialization and exercise. Volunteers help out by taking dogs on long walks so they can get adequately exercised. Volunteers get to have all the fun, from what I have seen. When someone signs up to volunteer at the Sequoia Humane Society, they can select the different activities they wish to do. They can walk the dogs, play with cats and kittens, assist with the kennel work, groom the animals, and a number of other activities that benefit the animals." more...

Tailwaggers Volunteer Spotlight -- Dee Nicholson
|
Dee began volunteering at Tailwaggers Thrift Shop in August 2007. Animals have always been a big part of her life and a friend suggested that she volunteer after retiring from Broadway Gas & Deli in 2006. She volunteers two days a week and is always willing to fill in more if needed.
"Working at Tailwaggers has been very good for me," says Dee. "Not only do I get to work with other great volunteers, it also gives me a chance to meet and keep in contact with so many nice people. When I leave work I feel good about myself because I know I have helped the animals - they need all the help they can get."

Support Our Recycling Fundraiser
We are facilitating a fundraiser program that recycles cell phones, ink cartridges, DVD movies & video games, laptop computers, MP3 players, digital cameras, camcorders, video game consoles, etc. By participating in our recycling program, you are also protecting the air and water from potentially harmful consumer electronic waste. Recycled cell phones and ink jet cartridges are properly disposed in accordance with state and federal EPA guidelines. Not only are you protecting the environment, but you are also providing the less fortunate a means of obtaining an inexpensive cell phone. The proceeds will benefit the voucher programs and the cost of taking care of the animals in the facility. Donations are tax deductible.
For your convenience, we can pick up your donated electronic devices in large quantities. You can also drop them off at the facility located at 6073 Loma Ave. in Eureka. For further details, please call 442-1782. |
