SHS Encourages Local Businesses to Go Pet-Friendly - Take Your Dog to Work Day is Friday, June 26th!
Take Your Dog to Work DayThe Sequoia Humane Society joins Pet Sitters International in encouraging businesses to become a true friend of the canine community by inviting employees to bring their pet to work on Friday, June 26th.

First celebrated in 1999, Take Your Dog to Work Day was created to honor dogs and the great companions they make, and to encourage their adoption from humane societies, shelters and breed rescue clubs. This annual event encourages employers to experience the value of pets in the workplace for this one special day, and to promote pet adoptions.

According to a 2006 survey conducted by the American Pet Products Association (APPA), nearly one in five companies in the United States allows pets in the workplace. The survey showed some strikingly positive opinions toward pets in the workplace.

o 55 million Americans believe having pets in the workplace leads to a more creative environment.
o 53 million believe having pets in the workplace decreases absenteeism.
o 50 million believe having pets in the workplace helps co-workers get along better.
o 38 million believe having pets in the workplace creates a more productive environment, and
o 46 million people who bring their pets to the workplace work longer hours.

Here are some tips that will help make your 'dog day' at the workplace a success:

o Dogs should be kept on a leash, unless in the employee's office or cubicle.
o All dogs should be vaccinated and people/dog friendly.
o Employees should use a baby gate to prevent dogs from leaving their office unsupervised.
o Specific areas (such as bathrooms) can be designated as dog-free.
o Breaks can be used to take your dog for a walk (it's good exercise for you, too!)
o Have a backup plan for taking your dog home if s/he is not comfortable in the work environment.

Felines of Humboldt County, Unite!
Join us for the 1st Annual Meow March!Join us for our 1st annual "Meow March" - a virtual cat walk, done entirely online and from the comforts of your own home (that's right, you don't even have to get your paws dirty!).

Using your mouse (the one attached to your computer, of course) you and your feline friend will raise funds for those less fortunate kitties that have been deprived of catnip, and - in some cases - even food, pets and a warm place to sleep.

"Meow March" is the feline counterpart to the Sequoia Humane Society's annual "Mutt Strut" (why should those drooling dogs have all the fun?) - and just like in the Mutt Strut you and your 4-legged companion collect pledges from friends, family and co-workers to…what…march? Finicky felines, no! Simply coax your cuddly kitty over to your computer (she's generally laying across your keyboard anyway, right?) and go to www.woofstock.org to begin - it's that easy! more...

Kennel Staff Develop Their First Aid Skills
Participants learned the basics of first aid, including how to evaluate a sick or injured pet.Kennel manager, Wanda Regan, has been working at the Sequoia Humane Society for almost 20 years. She's treated thousands of wounds and illnesses - you might say she's an expert. Wanda is responsible for the life of each and every animal that comes through our Pet Adoption Center, so she wants to make sure that our kennel staff is knowledgeable about animal health and first aid.

Last month Wanda and her kennel staff attended introductory and advanced "First Aid for Pet Professionals" workshops offered through HSU's Extended Education program. Taught by Dr. Jeff Kelly-Day of Myrtle Avenue Veterinary Hospital, participants learned the basics of first aid, including how to evaluate a sick or injured pet, taking and interpreting body vitals (e.g. temperature & heart rate), and triage for injured pets - as well as hands-on techniques, such as correctly applying a splint or bandage, how to stop bleeding, cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, wound cleaning and care, and more.

"While we're not a veterinary hospital, we do end up treating a number of minor illnesses and injuries here at the shelter," says Regan. "It's important for our staff to know how to handle both healthy and sick animals." more...

Rainbow Mini-Storage Acts as a Community Partner
Rainbow Mini Storage - helping with the overflow. When Tailwaggers Thrift Shop manager, Elly Burger, asked Jenny from Rainbow Mini-Storage if they could help out by donating a large, ground level storage unit, she enthusiastically said, "Yes!"

Tailwaggers is located in Henderson Center on the corner of F Street and Grotto, right next to the post office. It occupies two small store fronts but still has limited space, especially for large items like furniture.

"We receive lots of calls from people wanting to donate furniture," says Burger, "but the store is already overcrowded with clothing, books, knick-knacks and other household items. I hate to turn down a donation, but what can we do if we have nowhere to put it?" more...

"Benji" is Extra Special!
Benji: sweet and special."Are you sure that's a Labradoodle?" That's the question we were all asking when Lt. Steve Knight from the Humboldt County Animal Shelter sent us pictures of Benji. Well, whatever his lineage, Benji is one big, sweet hunk of a dog.

He'd been admitted to the county shelter as a stray and his owner did not reclaim him. Normally he would have been put up for adoption, but he'd had a seizure while at the shelter, and the former owner confirmed that he'd had two additional seizures during his 8 month lifespan. So the county called SHS and asked if we'd take him into our adoption program, since he'd require special care and an adopter who understood his unique needs.

Lt. Knight brought Benji to Sunny Brae Animal Clinic, where they performed laboratory tests to rule out possible causes for his seizures. All the tests came back normal, and due to Benji's young age it is unlikely that the seizures were caused by tumors. more...

Senior HSU Student Creates Photo Journal of Pets
As a no-kill shelter, we're committed to making sure that each cat and dog is placed in a loving, responsible, life-long home, no matter how long it takes.Sue Ringwald is no ordinary HSU senior. She's a member of the OLLI program (Osher Lifelong Learning Institute) - a community of learners age 50 and older looking for intellectually stimulating learning opportunities on college campuses.

OLLI's motto is "insightful learning for ageless minds". They offer non-credit courses in disciplines such as Self-Expression and Creativity, Current Events and Literature. Sue's course, "Essence of Humboldt: A Photo Documentary Journal" invites students to "close your eyes and think about this unique place in which we live…the landscape, the people, the activities." It gives them the opportunity to learn the art and craft of documentary photography by choosing an aspect of the local community they feel passionate about and capturing it on film.

Since Sue's project is a little bit shorter term, she decided to document the lives of the animals while they're at the shelter - the hope in their eyes as you walk up to their kennel, the happiness when you engage them in play, the gentle care given to them by the shelter staff. more...

Protecting Pets from Domestic Violence
Protecting pets and children from domestic violence.Pets are part of the family in the majority of American households. These animals are often treated like members of the family, but if the family is experiencing violence they can become targets as well.

People who abuse animals often also abuse children and other family members. In recent surveys of women entering shelters for protection from domestic violence, almost half report that their pet has been threatened, injured or killed by their partner. Others report that they delayed leaving their homes because they feared their pet would be hurt when they left. The prevalence of pet abuse by children in these families is also disturbingly common.

The Sequoia Humane Society is working with the Humboldt Domestic Violence Coordinating Council to help educate the community about the danger to pets from domestic violence. more...

SHS Adoption Stories
Joey found a happy, loving home.Joey (aka "JoJo") was adopted from SHS in 2006 after spending an entire year at our shelter. Joey was rescued from a Mexican slum, where he'd been chained up for the first 11 months of his life. He developed "barrier aggression" because of his confinement, causing him to lunge at anything going by his cage. Jana Hollifield saw through his scared façade - she brought him home and gave him the love he needed to become a 'real dog' again.

Recently we received a letter from Joey telling us about his new life:

Hello all my Humane Society Friends! I thought I'd give you an update on my life since my adoption. My new Mom takes me to Happy Dog Monday through Friday for doggie day-care. I love to socialize with all my friends, particularly the pretty lady dogs! At home, I have a nice yard, but I love to spend time on my deck, overlooking our panoramic view. (I'm convinced everything within sight is my property.) Oh, and guess what! I now have my very own toys, which I love to play with, and my very own fluffy bed, right in the bedroom with my Mom. People comment to my Mom how happy I always seem. Of course I'm happy, life is great! more...

Training Tips
Dogs that typically pull at their leash are easily corrected with the Gentle Leader Harness.Does your dog drag you down the lane when you take him for a walk? Try using a Gentle Leader Easy Walk Harness! It never causes coughing, gagging or choking because the chest strap lays low across the breastbone, not on the delicate tracheal area. Dogs that typically pull at their leash are easily corrected with the Gentle Leader Harness, available at many local pet stores.

Donate Your Old Cell Phone

Support Our Recycling Fundraiser

We are facilitating a fundraiser program that recycles cell phones, ink cartridges, DVD movies & video games, laptop computers, MP3 players, digital cameras, camcorders, video game consoles, etc. By participating in our recycling program, you are also protecting the air and water from potentially harmful consumer electronic waste. Recycled cell phones and ink jet cartridges are properly disposed in accordance with state and federal EPA guidelines. Not only are you protecting the environment, but you are also providing the less fortunate a means of obtaining an inexpensive cell phone. The proceeds will benefit the voucher programs and the cost of taking care of the animals in the facility. Donations are tax deductible.

For your convenience, we can pick up your donated electronic devices in large quantities. You can also drop them off at the facility located at 6073 Loma Ave. in Eureka. For further details, please call 442-1782.

Cat Trivia...
Cats lack a true collarbone. Because of this lack, cats can generally squeeze their bodies through any space they can get their heads through. You may have seen a cat testing the size of an opening by careful measurement with the head.

Dog Trivia...
The Afghan Hound is mentioned in writings as far back as 4000 B.C., and its name can be translated as "baboon" or "monkey-faced hound." Despite the unflattering name, he was a favorite of royalty.
